something about the guns. the nra statement today is sadly and shamefully inadequate, calling for more guns and rejecting real action against gun violence. at a defining a historic moment for our nation demanding courageous leadership, the nra has declined to step forward as a credible and constructive partner. the proposal for more armed guards in schools may be helpful in some instances, but it falls short of the strong, serious comprehensive action needed to stop the kind of horrific tragedy that occurred last week. many police that spoke to me on that day when we take a said that the killer was so heavily armed that they doubted they could have stopped him. the american people are demanding real change. the nra proposal fails to offer any real protection from violence. members in connecticut and around the country are writing and calling me to say that the nra does not speak for them. it was a call for action. the nra has failed to answer the call. we need to do something about these guns, about the assault weapons, the kind that was used in the new town tragedy. i am very proud to join

the power on the congress and senate. you have the power of the nra but on the ground so many millions of people are advocating for gun control. so i think at this point, you need to -- when you think about the strategic coalitions that make people power recognize that the nra's not omnipotent, it may behave like god, but actually, it's not. also what we need in schools, more detectives in schools in new york, in urban areas, that's exactly what you have. and what you have is criminalization of young people. particularly people of color. when you think of a piece like mother jones that takes you over 60 years, most of the guns are illegal. >> that's clearly what we have in this case. >> that's what we have, the guns were legal. so what we never want to do is go to where the power and profit sits. so what we do, we talk about we need this for children. and we need to deal -- we need to criminalize the mental health which is what we will do, but what we don't do is treat the issue. >> also, we have a security mind-set, understandably, right? exactly. the impulse of apocalypse for securit

correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it

with the coalition of gun owners, we used a republican pollster to poll gun owners and nra members, you get from 70 to 90%, depending on the common sense issue we could do that would make our country safer. let me give you one example. roughly 40% of the guns sold in america are sold in what's called the secondary market, in other words, private sales. where there's no federal registration at all, where people with criminal backgrounds, where you could get somebody on the terrorist, no-fly list who can't get on a plane, but could go to the secondary market and buy weapons. overwhelmingly 84% of gun owners -- 82% of gun owners in america believe that should change. changing that alone makes a difference. i'll give you the specific example how. up with out of two women that are murdered with a gun are murdered by someone they know well. in states that don't allow people to trade in private gun sales or gun shows and the like, that number drops by 40%, because the people with the intention to do wrong, or who have a misdemeanor dofl abuse can't buy guns in america, makes people safer. >> you have had

is sketchy. in fact, it is was the n.r.a. and other gun rights movement have scared congress into passing rules into keeping data. we do know for sure. some estimates put it at 40% of guns by unlicensed sellers. but nobody really knows. we know the number of background checks performed. we don't know the rest. guest: we don't have a registry of gun owners and, in fact, the rules are opposite. the rules are so strict that the f.b.i. can't keep data on its gun checks more than 24 hours. they have to purge their data every day and that includes data of people who have been prohibited from buying guns. there is other perverse things in the law. if you are on the terrorist watch list and prohibited from flying you are not in the instant check system, you are not prohibited from buying a gun unless you follow in one of those categories. host: if the f.b.i. has to purge within 24 hours, could somebody buy a gun every three days, two three days or so? are there limits on how many guns you can buyin a year? guest: there is not a federal limit. you can buy a dozen guns or two dozen guns, you can bu
